March 5-8, 2012 – a snippet of this week

Monday
  • ·         A guest speaker, Deborah Stevenson, came to class and performed her slam poetry.  I personally do not care at all for slam poetry, it’s all full of angst and rapping and gunk.  I’ll stick with Keats.
  • ·         Trip to Holland Park.  This is another one of London’s great parks, complete with a super cool pond and lots of peacocks chilling around the place.  The peacocks were cool, but kinda scary when they stare you down as you sit trying to enjoy your book.
  • ·         Play at night – She Stoops to Conquer.  This was one of the funniest plays I’ve seen!  Finally a play that doesn’t use the f-word 8 times a minute or have creepy old-man-nudity.  This play was fantastic and soooo entertaining.

Tuesday
  • ·         A trip to the shopping strip where we picked out the most hideous outfits for each other and had to try them on.  It’s true that British people are a lot more fashionable than Americans are, but they excel in perfecting the “grunge” look.  They all look like they’ve perfectly just rolled out of bed and put on some random hobo’s clothes.  My friends picked out a pair of neon giraffe-print leggings, a clown-esque sequin dress, and a dirty and tattered jean jacket for me.  No, I did not buy anything that day.
  • ·         Another play – Bingo that tells the story about William Shakespeare after his play-writing days.  Patrick Stewart played Shakespeare, which is about the only good thing I can say for this play.  It showcased his horrible relationship with his daughter and wife and how miserable the end of his life was.  The plot-line was thoroughly confusing and broken.  Patrick was great, but the play was a dud.

Wednesday
  • ·         Les Miserables!!!   The best play on EARTH!!  Everyone should come to London just to see this play!  Jean Valjean was played by an understudy, but it was still fantastic.  The staging was phenomenal, the singing was extraordinary, and everything was perfect.  A must-see for sure.

  1. ·         Dinner at O’Neils – my favorite pub in Europe.  This is the same pub I went to in Wales, and they make the best barbecue burgers (filled with a burger patty, chicken breast, and bacon.  Meat overload, so best shared with a friend).

Les Mis!!!

This is the sky we walked out to after the play.  Life can't get much better than this

AMAZING

Waiting for our 3 meat burgers, aka-"Before we died from clogged arteries"
 Thursday
  • ·         Picnic in Hyde Park with Lyssa and Mckelle.  We went to the grocery store and got all kinds of weird British foods, drinks, and candies to try that their friends had recommended.  The drinks were disgusting, the food was pretty good, and the British version of M&M’s (“Smarties”) were dumb.  M&M’s are waaaaay better.
  • ·         Watched “Bright Star” together as a class.  We’re studying Keats right now, so it was a great plug for the movie.  I’ve already seen it, but this round I got to experience it with a room full of 40 crying girls.  Much more entertaining.

How happy and naive we were - before we tasted the disgusting drinks.
